Rosace de plafond en papier – DIY

Paper ceiling medallions

Salut,

To make this paper medallion, I folded 72 10 x 10 cm squares of paper (I used 160g/m² paper but it was a bit too thick so would recommend 100g or 120g). The shape is known as origami modular sonobe unit and you can find, on the internet, several videos on how to make it. But here are my instructions as well.
  1. First, cut a 10 x 10 com square of paper.
  2. Fold the paper in half, crease well and unfold. Fold both the left and right side to meet in the middle. Crease well and unfold.
  3. Make two diagonal folds, one top right and one bottom left. Crease well.
  4. Fold the left and right flaps again to meet in the middle
  5. Fold along the top and bottom diagonals as shown above. Crease well and unfold.
  6. Refold on the diagonals but, this time, tuck the top left and bottom right corner under the flap
  7. Fold your unit in two along the central line. Crease well. Fold the two tips outwards along the small diagonals. Crease well.
  8. And here you have your sonobe unit
  9. After that, all you need is make as many sonobe units as you want/need and tuck them into each others.
To make sure the whole thing stayed together, I used some all purpose glue and sellotape on the side that is not on display. The two sides look actually quite different from one another but both nice in my opinion. So before gluing, make sure you’ve made up your mind about which side you’ll put on display.
The beauty of this DIY for paper ceiling medallions is that you can really personalise it in terms of colour, shape and size, so have fun!
